Born and bred in Buckinghamshire, England, Richard’s path in wine began after completing (and arguably during) his Diplôme D’Études Française at L’Université Stendhal in Grenoble, France, when he was apprenticed at Louis Latour, followed by experience at Olivier Leflaive, Domaine Jacques Prieur and a Diplôme en Commercialisation des Vins et de leurs Derivés at the Lycée Viticole, in Beaune, Burgundy. Following a magical 7 years in France, in 1996 he moved to South Africa where his career continued at Longridge Winery, Darling Cellars and Dominion Wine Company, before establishing Richard Hilton Vineyards in 2003. Aside of wine and gastronomy, Richard enjoys spending time with his family, tinkling the ivories, strumming his guitar, fly-fishing and painting.

Outside of farming, Tjuks enjoys travelling throughout Southern Africa, is an avid cyclist (in 2014 he completed his 21st Cape Argus Cycle Tour), and a keen salt-water fisherman.
Richard Rose; Viticulturist
Born and bred in Stellenbosch and Cape Town, Richard studied wine-making & viticulture at Elsenburg Wine School, Stellenbosch, before completing his Honours in Business Management at the University of Cape Town. Since 2006 he has been responsible for the vineyards (30ha) and orchards (220ha) at Elgin Orchards which is IPW Accredited and a BWI Champion (only one of +/-20 in the country). Richard is passionate about farming, even in his spare time, and runs a compost and earthworm plant to complement their sustainable and conservation farming. When not on the farm, you’ll find him fishing, hunting (buck) and golfing.
